Perfectly Ripe

I don't take strawberries for granted
or forget they only come once a year
perfectly ripe lasting barely one day
pointless to eat them any other time

not like potatoes we keep all winter
in the insulated room off the garage
more like tomatoes good fresh from
the garden dried or frozen for later

nothing really measures up though
their redness sweetness readiness
to soften intensifies their pleasure
sugar draws juice then thick cream
