four-footed beings thrive around us

whitely goes her way Ginger
cringes from some ancient threat
whole deer families nibble through
day and night turning on the light

spooked by the sudden wind
squirrels bury nuts climb trees
and walk the telephone wire
a skunk shares the cats' food
we few humans watch wonder
at our place in the web of life
